Who Is

QUEEN IDEN

Queen Iden, born around 1673, played a pivotal role in the tumultuous history of the Benin Kingdom during the early 18th century. Married to Oba Ewuakpe, the twenty-seventh Oba of Benin, she faced unprecedented challenges marked by rebellion and the withdrawal of support from key chiefs. Her enduring commitment to peace and sacrifice for the unity of the kingdom remains celebrated. After the death of Oba Ewuakpe’s mother, Queen Ewebonoza, Queen Iden stood by him through a series of tragedies, including a rebellion against the Oba. In a remarkable act, Queen Iden intervened to end the rejection of Oba Ewuakpe’s rule by offering herself in a sacrificial act. This selfless act not only brought immediate reconciliation but also stability and peace to the Benin Kingdom. Queen Iden’s legacy is commemorated annually on February 14th as Oloi Iden’s Day, recognizing her heroism and enduring impact on Benin’s rich cultural heritage.
